Preoperative Examinations

A free preoperative examination is included with every surgery.  A preoperative examination assumes that no problems are expected to be found.  Further, it is not a complete examination; it is an examination only for fitness for surgery and anesthesia.  It does not include discussion, diagnosis, or treatment of any medical problems whatsoever.  If problems are found or if you know or suspect problems will be found, and if you would like further information about such problems and wish to discuss them with the doctor, then a Medical Visit fee will be applicable (see above).

.

We very strongly believe that an annual examination and consultation are an important part of pet well care. However, in order to better serve our clients, to provide the services they want, to give them a choice, and to make well care more affordable, we do not require that a well care examination be purchased in order to receive vaccines or to purchase other routine well care tests, such as canine heartworm tests, intestinal parasite examinations and feline retrovirus testing. Therefore, the fees noted below do not include examination or consultation. If an examination or consultation is desired, it may be added for an additional fee. As an alternative we highly recommend our Free Vaccines For Life program which includes an annual physical examination and consultation; it is a better bargain in the long term and a much better medical plan for your pet.

Purevax vaccines are our preferred vaccines for cats because they are adjuvant-free.  Most other vaccines have adjuvants which are not recommended for cats by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.  If you have questions about non-adjuvanted vaccines and why they are preferred for cats, click here for more information.  For the cats in the Free Vaccines For Life program we only use non-adjuvanted Purevax vaccines.

Preoperative Laboratory Testing

We very strongly believe in the necessity and value of preoperative laboratory testing for safety in pets before anesthesia and surgery, and our best advice is to do it. However, we do not require it except under certain circumstances, such as in pets over 11 years of age. If you would like to treat your pet the way the veterinarian treats his own pets, then choose to do the lab work.

.

These tests are considered valid within 60 days before the procedure. With the exception of Profile IV, the others can be performed the same day as the procedure. Profile IV needs to be performed at least 2 days, but not more than 60 days, before the planned procedure. In the unusual event that a pet needs to have more than one procedure performed on different days, preoperative labs should be performed after each procedure before the next one commences. If you would like more information, please ask us.
